1984년에 간행된 [낭만주의 영시] (탐구당, 이재호 역)라는 책이 내 수중에 있은 지는 한참 되었다. 헌책인데, 언제 어디서 구입했는지도 기억나지 않는다. 그간 읽지도 않았고, 버리지도 않았다. 지난주 모 소설가와 만나 잠깐 대화를 나누었는데, 그분의 전공이 영문학(정확히는 영어교육인데, 당시는 커리큘럼이 거의 같았다고)인데, 옛날 공부하던 얘기가 잠깐 나왔고, "The child is father of the man."이란 구절이 운위되었다. 계기였다. 어제 오전 모처럼 한가하여 오랫동안 곁에 머물러만 있던 책을 펼쳐 시들을 읽었다. 1700년대 후반에 태어나 1800년대 전반기까지 살았던 사람들의 시선집이다. 괜찮았다. <악마의 목소리>는 당시의 편견을 깨고 육체의 감각을 칭송한 노래이고, <순수의 조짐>은 작고 하찮은 것들의 우주적 가치를 내세운 노래이다.

모든 성서 또는 경전들은 다음 오역들의 원인이었다.
인간은 육체와 영혼, 두 참된 존재 원리를 가졌다.
악이라는 에너지는 육체에서만, 선이라는 이성은 영혼에서만 나온다.
에너지를 따른다는 이유로 신은 영원히 인간을 괴롭힐 것이다.
하지만 이 말의 반대가 진리이다.
인간에게 영혼과 구분되는 육체란 없다, 육체란 오관에 의해 판별되는 영혼의 일부이며, 이 시대 영혼의 입구이다.
에너지는 유일한 생명이며 육체에서 나온다, 이성이란 에너지의 한계이거나 주변이다.
에너지는 영원한 환희이다.

2. That Energy. calld Evil. is alone from the Body. & that Reason. calld Good. is alone from the Soul.
3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies.

1 Man has no Body distinct from his Soul for that calld Body is a portion of Soul discernd by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age
2 Energy is the only life and is from the Body and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy.
3 Energy is Eternal Delight
